Dear Friend,

As we look back on 2021, Palestine is on my mind. Palestinians seeking peace and justice faced repression and apartheid by the Israeli government, with the full backing of the U.S. But thousands of people stood up, spoke out, and shared our solidarity. Would you join us in 2022?

The year started with the struggle in Sheikh Jarrah. Israeli settlers invaded the East Jerusalem neighborhood to steal homes from the families who had lived there for generations. It’s an injustice that’s played out thousands of times with thousands of homes over the years. As one Israeli settler from Brooklyn told a Palestinian, “If I don’t steal your home, someone else will steal it.” But different from past home thefts, months of neighborhood nonviolent resistance ignited a blaze of solidarity across Palestine and the world.

Palestinians held mass marches and protests in Gaza, in the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, and in Israel. In response, the Israeli military and the Palestinian Authority police brutally attacked and jailed protesters. Mobs of Israeli extremists went house to house committing violence against Palestinians, and even invaded the sacred Al-Aqsa mosque.

Then, to compound the injustice, the Israeli military launched a bombing campaign of Gaza. The bombs took the lives of at least 247 Palestinians, including 66 children, and 13 Israelis lost their lives as well.1 The bombs destroyed schools, hospitals, homes, and Gaza’s only COVID-19 testing site. They left 90,000 people displaced.

In spite of all that, thousands of Grassroots supporters like you showed humanity and solidarity in the face of violence. We supported the Palestinian people and stood up for human rights and liberation.

We sprang into action and launched an emergency appeal — and people responded!  Thanks to supporters like you, we pooled over $600,000 to send to Palestinian movements on the ground supporting youth and community organizing and mobilizing, tracking and challenging human rights violations, providing immediate medical relief, and bolstering mental health support.

2022 will be another important year for Palestine. Prime Minister Bennett’s administration is even more right-wing than Netanyahu’s before it, and is going to great lengths to attack and slander Palestinian social justice organizations.2

Grassroots supporters like you joined hands with Palestinian civil society this year and made a real impact. Could you make an end-of-year donation to keep our Palestine program going strong in 2022? Thank you!

In gratitude,

Chung-Wha Hong
