The Hechinger Report’s mission from day one has been grounded in the belief that a robust, independent press is essential for a democratic society.

We believe that our education system benefits from incisive reporting, which exposes problems and evaluates research, evidence and solutions. And this year, through our 400+ stories, columns, and op-eds, we undertook both aims.

As the coronavirus continued to erode the accessibility and effectiveness of our education system and the aftermath of the presidential election highlighted our deepening political divides, we reported on the gaping divides in American education — often far ahead of other media. Our reporting on the shortages of nurses, substitutes, and bus drivers paved the way for similar stories by The New York Times and NPR, and our story on the disappearance of men from college predated the Wall Street Journal’s piece by nine months!

For more than a decade, Hechinger has used our journalism to drive public conversation and reform in our pursuit of tackling some of the most pressing education problems in the U.S. But we can only do this work with YOUR support.
