Dr. K. Kevyne Baar has been a fan of People For since its earliest days, remembering vividly the earliest days of the organization when Norman Lear and Rep. Barbara Jordan were both rare voices against a tide of right-wing extremism and hostility. “I really love how they work across generations,” Dr. Baar wrote in our recent Legacy for Liberty newsletter, explaining why she’s always felt that there was a place for her in People For and its work. “We can’t just hope things will get better – that education and understanding, kindness and consideration, love not hate will be the order of the day. We must invest in that vision and by supporting People for the American Way, I’m grateful to have been given the opportunity to do my part." Read on for the rest of her story! In 2021, we saw the greatest wave of voter suppression bills since the rise of Jim Crow. Over and over again, Senate Republicans abused the filibuster to prevent critical voting rights legislation from even being debated, let alone passed. We have been urging President Biden to take action – and after three months of events at the White House, he is now listening. People For President Ben Jealous narrates the story of how we grew our voting rights movement this year with help from members and activists nationwide – and how we can keep the fight going until those protections are passed. People For members and coalition activists demonstrated for voting rights in New York this month >> The movement to criminalize abortion in the U.S. is on the brink of its biggest victory in 50 years, since the decision in Roe v. Wade. On December 1, the U.S. Supreme Court heard arguments in the case of a Mississippi abortion ban that could undo health care protections for millions of people in one fell swoop. Groups that want to eliminate access to abortion like to describe themselves with terms like “pro-life” and “pro-family,” but those are intentionally deceptive. Read on for how People For, its members, and reproductive justice activists have been mobilizing in the fight for reproductive freedom nationwide. Read our full post about the Mississippi case and what will happen next >> Fair and just courts are an indispensable part of any democracy. As we head to the end of 2021, we can be proud of the phenomenal progress we made this year in the long-term effort to repair the federal courts. The diverse group of spectacular nominees from the White House and the record-breaking pace of confirming them show that our leadership fully understands just how important this is. Read more about the record-breaking pace on nominations and confirmations, and what we can expect next from the Biden-Harris administration and the U.S. Senate on the courts! Read all about the great year we’ve had for getting women of color onto the courts >> For 15 years, People For’s Right Wing Watch has been tracking, exposing, and disrupting the Far Right. We have held some of the most toxic propagandists and politicians accountable and limited their ability to spread dangerous lies and conspiracy theories. 2021 was a deeply worrisome year for tracking the Far Right, but Right Wing Watch has been at the forefront of it all, with reporters routinely citing us as an expert source. Watch our new video, in which Kristen Doerer covers this year in the Far Right and what we’ll be watching for in 2022. Please click on each headline to read the full article...
