** VMMCs fall short of 2020 target

The annual number of voluntary medical male circumcisions (VMMCs) performed in the 15 priority countries fell dramatically in 2020, mainly as a result of service disruptions caused by COVID-19. In a preview of an upcoming progress report, the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) reveals that 2.8 million VMMCs were performed in 2020, compared to 4.1 million in 2019. About 18 million men and boys were circumcised in the 15 countries from 2016 to 2020, falling far short of the 2020 target of 25 million. During the past year, however, programmes in some countries recovered and even expanded VMMC coverage despite the COVID-19 pandemic.
