Did you know that Transparency USA is the only organization that provides accurate and timely updates to state-level campaign finance data? Here’s a peek behind the curtain of our 501(c)(3): It takes between $10,000-$30,000 to add a new state (depending on each state’s unique requirements), and more to maintain and update each one annually.

When I started Transparency USA, I just wanted to be able to access campaign finance data with a quick search. Instead, I found government websites difficult to navigate, and the few other sites I tried were often out-of-date and full of errors.

It seemed the information about money in politics was really only being used by media-types and political insiders — not ok.

So I decided to try to fix it. Now, five years and 10 states later, our scrappy little team ([link removed]) is still problem-solving our way through new states and their confusing campaign finance rules. Now we’re expanding to more states and offering our data to more outlets in 2022.

EVERYONE should have the same kind of easy access that I was looking for when this all started. Whether you display our data on your website or search for your own answers at transparencyusa.org, you can feel confident that the numbers you are seeing are accurate, up-to-date, easy-to-search and understand.

I am so proud of what my team is building. Transparency USA is a nonprofit business, and we use every donation we receive to make more reliable data accessible to more people. While large donations allow us to scale quickly, it’s the many small-dollar donors who make the biggest impact. Much like we see in campaign finance.
