Hi Friend,
“Help me.”
Those are the two words Khalil* knows in English. He repeated them over and over during our conversation last week. Through a Farsi interpreter, he told me he was a student until the Taliban took over Afghanistan. When the schools shut down, he moved in with his parents who don’t know he’s gay.
Khalil knows better than anyone that if he’s outed, he’ll be subject to public execution—by stoning or being crushed under a wall. He sobbed, “At 18 years old, what you’re supposed to look forward to is the rest of your life, but my life is over.”
Not if we can help it. This is unconscionable, and we won’t stand for it. No one should be persecuted for their sexual orientation or gender identity. Ever.
