Friends,

As we approach the end of the year, you are probably getting fundraising emails from a lot of campaigns. I know I am!

Most of us are not wealthy, so with our limited resources, how do we decide which campaigns receive a donation?

Will you please hear me out about why you should donate to our campaign for Polk County Attorney here in Iowa?

If you’re not convinced after reading this email that this race is important enough to donate to or volunteer for, please unsubscribe using the link at the bottom of this email and we will stop sending you emails.

Here’s the thing: Polk County is the largest county in Iowa. What happens in Polk County impacts the entire State of Iowa and the more forward-thinking, evidence-based prosecutors we elect, the faster we get the justice reform we need in the entire nation.

You may not live in Iowa, but even if you don’t, what happens in this prosecutor’s race matters to our justice system in the U.S.

This is the first contested Polk County Attorney election in 3 decades.

Prosecutors often run unopposed. The current Polk County Attorney, who is not seeking reelection, has run unopposed in every election since he first won in 1990.

Over the past 3 decades, Iowa has frequently been one of the worst states in terms of racial disparities in our criminal and juvenile justice systems.

This is a rare opportunity to bring much needed change and reform to the Polk County Attorney's office.

I’m running to increase public safety through justice reform. County Attorneys (sometimes called District Attorneys in other jurisdictions) wield immense power within our criminal and juvenile justice systems.

They decide who to charge, what to charge, whether to divert, the contents of plea deals, whether or not to request bail, and so much more. Your local prosecutor's office is where the rubber meets the road in our justice system.

If elected, there are a number of reforms I will make. Here are just a few, but you can find my full platform here: kimberlyforiowa.com/platform

  1. Cash Bail:  Stop requesting cash bail for people who are accused of low level, nonviolent offenses and who are not a safety threat to the community. There shouldn't be a two tier justice system, one for the rich and one for the poor. Public safety should be the only reason someone is in jail.

  2. Marijuana Possession: Stop prosecuting low level, nonviolent offenses like marijuana possession. We need to focus our time and resources on serious and violent crime.

  3. Juvenile Justice: Reform our juvenile justice system, using community-based, meaningful and successful diversion programs that increase literacy. Did you know about 70% of folks in prison can’t read above a 4th grade level? We need DAs and County Attorneys who connect the dots and advocate for investment in what works.

With your help, we can win this race and bring real, meaningful criminal justice reform to Iowa and to the nation. The more forward-thinking, evidence-based prosecutors we have out there, the faster we get a better justice system.

I hope you will consider donating. Thank you so very much if you do.

Thanks for hearing me out.

Kimberly
