Three Steps to Being a Better Self-Care Advocate

The holidays can be a very stressful time, and sometimes, as things quiet down, maintaining self-care is most important. Here are some things to keep in mind:

  1. Learn: Read this article on the history of self-care and these 12 quotes from Audre Lorde so you can better understand and explain why taking care of our mental and physical health is an integral part of activism.
  2. Watch: Check out this iconic video from Angela Davis on radical self-care posted as a part of a video series by AfroPunk in 2018. Rewatch some episodes of Something To Talk About Live! including one about self-care during political turmoil and one about helping young people who report feeling down
  3. Share: Use social media to share with friends and family what you’ve been doing to take care of yourself lately. Post a list of self-care activities, like this one from GirlBoss, to get the conversation started with groups you are a part of online.

Advocacy

Jan 6 Day of Remembrance and Action

As PFLAGers, we know that when we band together with our partners across race and place we can create lasting change. Throughout 2021, we have fought the actions of extremist politicians and militants who attacked the Capitol and have stormed our local school boards as they sought to strip away the rights of LGBTQ+ people, BIPOC people, women, immigrants, and more. Last year, we turned out in record numbers, made sure our votes were counted, and that the will of the people prevailed. To have a government of, by, and for the people, where all of our rights are respected and freedoms protected – including rights for LGBTQ+ people – we must continue the work to stop those who spread lies or incite violence as they try to claim or hold power.

So this January 6, exactly one year later, people across race, place, party, and background are holding candlelight vigils to say: In the U.S., the voters decide the outcome of elections. The promise of democracy is not a partisan issue but a calling that unites us.

Sign up to host a candlelight vigil in your community on Jan. 6!

We demand that our elected leaders pass urgent legislation that will protect this country from anti-democratic forces who are continuing their efforts to destroy it.

That’s why we must continue to show up for our rights and protect the freedom to vote.
