The Latest Research, Commentary, And News From Health Affairs

Monday, December 27, 2021

Dear John

A recent Age-Friendly Health article and podcast focused on trends in
home care versus nursing home workforce sizes.

Age-Friendly Health

A December article, part of the Age-Friendly Health initiative supported
by the John A. Hartford Foundation, examined direct care workers in
long-term care
.

Home care workers, including personal care aides and nursing assistants,
make up one-fifth of the US health care workforce. According to research
by Esther Friedman and colleagues, almost all states experienced an
increase in the size of their home care workforce between 2009 and 2020,
and most saw a decrease in their nursing home workforce, relative to the
number of people who need these services.

Friedman dove deeper into their research on an episode of A Health
Podyssey

podcast earlier this month.

December's Narrative Matters essay

is also about aging and health. In it, author Shivani Nazareth, a
genetic counselor, described using her own resources to identify the
root cause of her mother's changing personality.

New Blog Series:
Medicare and Medicaid Integration

Health Affairs is launching a new Forefront series,

**Medicare and Medicaid Integration**, featuring policy analysis,
proposals, and commentary that will inform policies on the state and
federal levels to advance integrated care for those dually eligible for
Medicare and Medicaid.

The series will include articles exploring the evidence base (and gaps
in our knowledge) and the range of views on various key issues-all
with the aim of enhancing the national conversation on this issue and
eliciting thoughtful responses from leaders in the public and private
sectors.

We are grateful to Arnold Ventures for
supporting this project. We are accepting submissions of articles for
the series. Submissions will be reviewed on a rolling basis and
considered for publication through August 2022.
