Tomorrow is a big day for Michigan, Team. Let me explain.
Tomorrow, Michigan’s first Independent Citizens Redistricting Commission is expected to vote on 3 sets of election district maps that will represent Michigan voters for the next decade.
For the first time in history, these maps were drawn by citizens, not by politicians.
You see, for decades, the state legislature had the power to draw maps and Republicans used this process to their advantage to choose their own voters and keep their candidates in safe seats.
That all changed in 2018 when Michigan voters passed an initiative to create the Independent Citizens Redistricting Commission and tomorrow, our state is expected to have completely new maps.
New maps mean new candidates on the ballot for a lot of voters.
While Michigan is losing an entire Congressional district in these new maps, we hope that these maps bring new opportunities for Michigan Democrats to win and grow our majority. Before we can do that, we need to make sure that voters understand their new district map and have an opportunity to meet Democrats that might be new on their ballot.
Introducing Michigan Democrats to their new maps is a big task, but I know that we can get it done if we come together.
