Every day, Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) provides lifesaving care to women and their children in some of the most remote areas in the world. Maternal health is and has been an integral part of the work we do addressing health inequities women face around the world.
When Odette, a midwife working in the MSF-supported Ndu health center in Democratic Republic of Congo, identified Amatou’s complications, she knew there was no time to waste.
Amatou, 25, has been a refugee in DRC, since 2017, when she fled Central African Republic. She was about to give birth in the village of Ndu—but MSF midwives determined she was suffering from a hemorrhage that couldn’t be managed at her local health center. She urgently needed to cross the river to the MSF-supported hospital in Bangassou for specialized care, one of the few places that can manage obstetric complications in the area.
For Amatou, her midwife’s quick response and the presence of MSF on either side of the river made the difference.
"Amatou is in good hands now", Odette said after accompanying her to the delivery room and headed back to the river to return to the Ndu health center.
Too often, women experience delays accessing necessary care during labor due to obstacles beyond their control, including violent conflict, economic status, and distance from a facility. MSF has dedicated maternal health programs in more than 25 countries, to provide women like Amatou with the timely, affordable medical care they deserve.
Thank you for taking a moment to send hope to our teams and their patients. Without your compassion, none of the work we do would be possible.
Sincerely,
Vera Eastman
