December 27, 2021
Dear Progressive Readers and Supporters,
Trevor Noah of Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show” has dubbed 2021 “the least bad year of the last two years.” I think his assessment is a bit too rosy.
Sure, 2020 was singularly awful, with the devastation caused by COVID-19 and the birth of the Big Lie Movement, led by the disgraced and deranged Donald Trump. But 2021 was at least equally bad, bookended by two catastrophic events: The violent insurrection at the U.S. Capitol by Trump supporters on January 6, and the announcement in late December that President Joe Biden’s Build Back Better plan to reinvigorate the economy and fight climate change was quite likely dead, stabbed in the back by members of his own party.
We learned, for the umpteenth time, that electing Democrats is not enough. We must instead build broad-based movements clamoring for progressive change. We must reaffirm our commitment to the ideals of democracy, and to the notion that truth matters.
That’s where The Progressive comes in. For the past 113 years, it has been a beacon of truth, a bastion of good reporting, and a bellwether for peace and social justice. In our magazine, on our website, and through our two ongoing projects (one to defend public schools, the other to place op-eds on topics of progressive interest in newspapers across the country), we are performing vital and urgent functions.
But in order for us to continue in a challenging media environment, we need your help. Please consider making a tax-deductible contribution to The Progressive, to allow this nonprofit publication to expand its reach and deliver on its mission to bring about a better world.
Let’s make 2022 the least bad year in quite a while.

P.S. – Our February/March issue will include what I consider to be the most important story of my four-decade journalistic career. It may also be the longest story in the history of the magazine. Don’t miss it!
P.P.S. – This year only, special COVID-19 tax rules allow taxpayers who take the standard deduction to claim a deduction of up to $300 and married couples taking the standard deduction to claim up to $600 for cash contributions made to qualifying charities in 2021
