After years of building grassroots pressure on issues like net neutrality, antitrust, and data privacy, the Biden Administration has appointed numerous digital rights rockstars who could give us a leg-up in implementing real policies to protect your rights:
-
Confirmed Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Chair Jessica Rosenworcel, a longtime champion of net neutrality and advocate for expanding broadband access to close the “homework gap.”1
-
FCC nominee Gigi Sohn, a Distinguished Fellow at the Georgetown Law Institute for Technology Law & Policy, EFF board member, and co-founder of Public Knowledge, a nonprofit public interest group that is involved in intellectual property law, competition, and choice in the digital marketplace, and an open standards/end-to-end internet.2
-
Confirmed Federal Trade Commission (FTC) Chair, Lina Khan, an antitrust hawk whose 2017 article in Yale Law Review reframed antitrust policy for the modern era by applying it to Amazon’s business model.3
-
FTC nominee Alvaro Bedoya, the Founding Director of Georgetown Law’s Center on Privacy & Technology. He is an expert in surveillance and data security, considers privacy a civil right, and is a prominent critic of facial recognition.4
-
Tim Wu, a prominent Big Tech critic, the “father of net neutrality,” and now Special Assistant to the President for technology and competition policy in the National Economic Council.5
-
Jonathan Kanter, “Google foe,” respected antitrust expert, and now leader of the Justice Department’s Antitrust Division.6
If all of the remaining appointees are confirmed, we have a historic opportunity to reinstate net neutrality, expand broadband access, break up Big Tech, address biometric surveillance technology, and more.
But we are going up against some of the most powerful companies in the world, their corrupt political allies, and their army of lobbyists.7 It’s going to take an ongoing push from advocacy organizations like Fight for the Future to ensure these appointees all get confirmed and then stand up to industry lobbyists and fight for real people. Will you help us stay ready for the battles ahead by becoming a monthly donor?
For the future of the internet,
Erica & the Team at ❤️Fight
