[[link removed]][[link removed]]Dear John,
2021 has been a year of growth for our work, including Mujeres Luchadoras, our newest organizing project. Mujeres Luchadoras comes out of a deep need for formerly detained women to have a voice in the local and national debates over immigration detention and deportation.
This spring, Mujeres Luchadoras led the first march in front of the T. Don Hutto detention center since the pandemic began. The powerful event featured speakers from Mujeres Luchadoras — including a mother recently reunited with her daughter on whose behalf she had organized — along with Amy Nelson, Willie Nelson’s daughter who created a short film [[link removed]] about Mujeres Luchadoras set to her father’s music. The protest was featured in coverage from NPR [[link removed]] and the Austin American-Statesman [[link removed]] (including this powerful photo set [[link removed]] ). The story of Mujeres Luchadoras members—Sonia and Edis—fighting to free their children from detention was also featured in this story from the BBC [[link removed]] .
Our community showed up to march behind these powerful women. We hope you will continue to show up with us in this important work however you are able to. One way to do so is to make a donation [[link removed]] [[link removed]] to keep our work going forward. Thank you for being a part of this work.
