Dear John, I’m new here; I started on November 1st. I’m grateful to be able to do this work, because, like you, I’m really concerned about what we’re doing to our planet Earth, including the huge negative impacts that plastic has on the climate.
My first heartbreaking wake-up call happened when I saw this photo of a seahorse with its tail wrapped around a plastic cotton swab stick. Within a month, I also learned that plastic contributes to climate change in a major way
throughout its lifecycle—including when it breaks down into the microplastics that pollute our waterways and end up in the ocean and our food. I'm also concerned about the health impacts of plastics. A very good friend of mine was recently diagnosed with breast cancer, and plastics are made with endocrine-disrupting chemicals that are known to contribute to cancer.
It's depressing. But what gives me hope is the great work that Plastic Pollution Coalition—the team and our coalition members—are doing to stem the tide.
As the Development Director, I'm here to help us grow our budget so we can add staff and increase our capacity overall in the coming years. I can’t do this
