John, With every challenge our world has faced in recent years, our incredible staff at the National Immigrant Justice Center (NIJC) has continued helping people and families navigate our immigration system while fighting to improve it. Keinar is a young mother who came to the United States in 2018 when she was just 20 years old to escape violence and abuse from her family and her partner. When she was given an expedited removal, Keinar contacted NIJC, who then represented her in her asylum case. Keinar experienced many difficult encounters with Chicago U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers, especially in getting her ankle shackle removed and keeping it off. In addition to legal support, NIJC also helped Keinar and her family access public benefits and counseling. Earlier this year, Keinar and her family won asylum! She looks forward to caring for her family and living without fear.
