Hi Reader,
It’s no secret that journalism is in financial trouble. Newsrooms all across the country are downsizing, even closing, and leaving news deserts in their wake. Investigative reporting is time-consuming and expensive, and so even though this kind of journalism is one of the most powerful tools we have to ensure a transparent democracy, it’s often among the first to be cut as remaining newsrooms struggle to stay afloat.
But ProPublica is different, thanks to readers like you. As a nonprofit newsroom, we don’t depend on advertising or short-term investors. We depend largely on donations from individuals, and we’ve grown significantly over the last few years. We’re able to help fill undeniable gaps in deep-dive journalism that have been left open all over the country.
In Georgia, we reported <[link removed]> on how Cobb County schools loosened COVID-19 restrictions at the start of the school year, and on the 458% rise in COVID-19 cases that followed. Our Wisconsin-based reporter recently published <[link removed]> an investigation into how the state’s court system tries to treat fathers as equal caregivers, and how it too often puts women who experienced domestic violence at risk by forcing them to co-parent with their abusers. And in Reno, Nevada, we exposed <[link removed]> how city officials allowed an out-of-state casino owner to displace hundreds of low-income residents by demolishing their housing, exacerbating one of the worst affordable-housing shortages in the country.
As a reader of ProPublica, you know how important it is for journalists to have the freedom, resources and ability to pursue stories that shine a light on corruption, miscarriages of justice and other types of wrongdoing. Donate today and help us continue to investigate injustice wherever we find it.
Give today and your gift will be doubled, thanks to a matching opportunity from NewsMatch. <[link removed]> ProPublica has been selected for this matching fund of up to $20,000 specifically because of our dedication to local, investigative reporting.
Help us earn an extra $20,000 today and have your donation doubled. <[link removed]> Your gift will help power one of the largest teams of investigative journalists in the country, digging into issues across this vast nation and holding people in power accountable, wherever they are.
Thanks so much, Jill Shepherd Proud ProPublican <[link removed]>
