When Donald Trump left office, you probably breathed a sigh of relief. It must have been a weight off your shoulders to see his corruption, attacks on democracy and abuses of power far away from the Oval Office—it sure was for us.
But we can’t fully relax. Trump exposed serious loopholes in our ethics rules, undermined the integrity of the Department of Justice, abused his power, weakened oversight and—we can’t forget—incited a deadly insurrection in an attempt to overturn the 2020 presidential election. He may no longer be the president, but that doesn’t mean our work is over. Not by a longshot.
After all, the problems Trump exposed and exacerbated are still there. He continues to spread lies about the election. States across the country have passed restrictive and racist voting laws. Big Lie proponents are running for elections offices around the country. Big money still dominates our political system. The threats to democracy are ongoing and, in some ways, more dangerous than ever.
