Team,
On this day in 1968, unbossed and unbought Shirley Chisholm did the unthinkable and became the first African American woman elected to Congress.
Shirley inspired countless women of color — including me — to get involved in politics and fight for what we believe in. Because as she always said, “If they don’t give you a seat at the table, bring a folding chair.”
She was an inspiration, a mentor, and a dear friend. I miss her everyday.
Her legacy floods the halls of Congress. And just last year, we elected the youngest, most diverse Congress in the history of America.
But all our progress is under threat as Trump continues to diminish the accomplishments of women of color with the vile, disgusting, and racist things that come out of his mouth.
In honor of Shirley’s historic election anniversary, I’m standing up for my sisters in Congress.
I’m fighting to defend our congresswomen of color and elect even more of them. If you’re with me, one of the most important ways you can help me fight back is by pitching in $5 or more now to keep me on the campaign trail in vulnerable districts.
The strength of our party and our country lies in our diversity. Let’s do everything we can to honor Shirley’s legacy and elect even more inspiring women of color to office.
In solidarity,
Barbara Lee
