Hi Reader,

As a fellow engaged citizen, I know you probably keep up with daily news from a few different newspapers or websites, not to mention podcasts, radio, mobile apps and more. But for those moments when you have some time to devote to the bigger picture — to read something that uncovers deep, systematic injustice, brazen corruption, dangerous indifference or incompetence — you turn to ProPublica.

We don’t spend our resources on the daily news, there’s enough of that out there (and so much of it very good). ProPublica ONLY does investigative work: well-researched, nonpartisan, fact-checked journalism that shines a light on our elected officials, government institutions, big corporations and more.

Take our recent story on portable generators <[link removed]>. As climate change leads to more frequent severe weather events that cause massive power outages, more and more people rely on portable generators to keep their families safe. But these generators are among the most dangerous consumer products out there, poisoning and sometimes killing their users with carbon monoxide. Even though the government knows the danger, it has failed to enact safety measures, and the industry still mostly regulates itself. We have been investigating carbon monoxide poisoning all year, and this is the fifth story we’ve published on the industry’s lack of government regulation.

There’s no shortage of issues that need this kind of attention, and most newspapers simply cannot afford it anymore. But ProPublica has sustained this work for over a decade, and grown our capacity with the help of readers like you who give <[link removed]> to support excellent accountability journalism.

Join us today and make a year-end donation <[link removed]> to support journalism that makes a difference. Your gift will help ensure that we have the resources to follow important stories, wherever they lead, however long it takes.

Warmly, Ragan Rhyne Senior Vice President, Development Proud ProPublican <[link removed]>
