Friends,

Yesterday, the Trump administration formally began the process of withdrawing the United States from the Paris Climate Agreement. The president’s decision to turn our back on the global effort to fight climate change is short-sighted, ill-informed and immoral.

The action will take effect on November 4, 2020 — one day after Election Day, making the stakes of this race even higher.

You may recall that when it was signed two countries, Syria and Nicaragua, did not sign on to the agreement, but both have since joined. So if we do withdraw, we will become the only country that is not a part of this historic action to combat climate change.

By making this choice, President Trump assured that we stand alone in walking away from the coordinated effort to stop the catastrophic warming of our planet.

Nowhere are the consequences of elections clearer than in this moment. We can support candidates who accept science and are committed to the United States leading the way on climate change, or we can elect leaders who turn their backs on the future.

Scientists have said that our timeline for preventing irreversible damage to our planet is roughly 10 years. That means we need to be ambitious when it comes to our policies. That’s why I support the Green New Deal.

Will you add your name to say that you support the Green New Deal too? We need to be bold and courageous if we are going to prevent global catastrophe.

Our standing in the world is already at a historic low, and this certainly will not help.

We need leaders who will step up to the challenge of climate change. And we’ll only get them if we elect them next year.

Every best wish,

Chris Murphy
