In just a handful of years, YIMBY Action has become of the most prominent pro-housing organizations in the country. 2020 and 2021 will go down in history as one of the most challenging times in American history, but through it all, countless stories of resilience and growth have shown through.
As the pandemic exposed every fault line in our society, the need for more housing was more obvious than ever. Thousands of YIMBYs across the country have joined the fight, and made this year a shining success for YIMBY Action.
Because of you, In 2021 we:
- Grew to over 3,000 individual donors Added 8 new chapters nationwide, including Orlando YIMBY, YIMBY Denver, Evolve Tri-Valley, Bend YIMBY, YIMBY Maryland, and Madison is for People!
- Collected thousands of signatures in support of housing projects all over the US, collectively speaking up for more than 15,000 homes!
- Pushed two major pro-housing bills across the finish line that essentially ended single-family-home-only zoning in California
- Helped draft legislation in San Francisco, Cars to Casas, that would make it easier to turn parking lots into housing
- Endorsed in local races across the country, including for the Atlanta City Council and special elections in California
- Our sister organization, YIMBY Law, has won or settled in our favor in nearly a dozen cases, potentially impacting thousands of new homes across the state of California
Because it turns out, housing is foundational. Housing is core to what we are as a species, and so it should be no surprise that it impacts every aspect of our existence.
Housing is the environment. Will we build dense, vibrant, sustainable communities? Or will we pave over the earth and grind away our lives on endless highways, destroying the climate as we sit in traffic of our own making?
Housing is the economy. Will we house our workforce? Or will we decide that jobs and opportunity should be sent “someplace else”. Someplace where they’re a bit less inconvenient for the comfortably housed, wherever that is.
Housing is equity and social justice. Will we welcome people into communities of opportunity? Will we integrate our schools? Will we allow the people who work in our communities the ability to live in our communities?
Will we end the policies that make us poorer and more segregated, that are pushing people into overcrowding and mega commuting?
Will we end the laws that were written with deliberately racist intent, that disproportionately harm people of color, and that make all of us poorer, more isolated, that deny us the ability to grow together?
You accomplished so much and we are grateful for every single one of you.
If you haven’t already, we hope that you would make a donation to the #GiveMeAbundantHousing campaign to help continue fueling the fight as we grow across the country and bring an end to the housing shortage.
