Two days after the next meeting (January 6th), we'll be hosting a round table with Congressional candidate Neal Walia! Lastly, sign up here for a 2022-focused one-on-one with the electoral chair! They would love to connect and find out ways to plug folks into our work, debrief 2021, or hear your ideas for 2022! If none of these times work please reach out and we'll get you plugged in some other time.
🌹 Abolition Working Group
Next meeting: Sunday, January 2nd | 7:00 - 8:00 PM Join us here!
Denver City Council will soon vote on a $4.7 million dollar contract with ShotSpotter—a faulty police surveillance technology tool with documented harmful effects on communities— which will be paid for using general city funds (as opposed to funds from the bloated police budget), after Denver City Council’s stated intentions to work toward defunding the police in the summer of 2020.
Prior to a public hearing, we are asking for folks from all districts to use this template to email your city council representatives and urge them to vote NO on this unnecessary, expensive, and dangerous contract. Feel free to cite this study from the office of the Inspector General of the City of Chicago and the summary from the ACLU (linked above) for concrete evidence that this surveillance will only harm our community. Abolition is the compromise! Stay tuned for more actions over the next few weeks!
🌹 Labor Committee Meeting
Next meeting: Likely early January, check slack for more details.
Recently,
Rogel Aguilera-Mederos was convicted of homicide and sentenced to 110 years
in prison. He was driving a truck and crashed after his brakes failed -
killing 4 people near golden. There has been a trucker boycott of
Colorado due to the sentence and rallies are being held by the 9-5 org
and immigrant activists. DDSA is putting together a pressure campaign to
call for Jared Polis to grant clemency for Rogel. Public pressure is already having an effect. The case has garnered significant local and international attention that will continue to grow. Come join
us in securing justice for Rogel - contact Hill or Ben on slack.
We're also
currently working on strike support and DSA4USPS. We have also formed
an emergency workplace organizing subcommittee to take workplace
organizing requests from national. More updates to come - a lot going on
- get in here!

🌹 Housing Justice Committee
Next meeting: Wednesday, January 5th | 7:00 - 8:00 PM Join us here!
The
Housing Justice Committee is kicking off phase 2 of NEWR, starting to set up
working groups to plan the massive electoral campaign we'll be running in 2022. In the meantime, we'll be working with the East Colfax Community Collective
to help set up a rapid-response eviction defense team in their neighborhood, try to expand the reach of their
legal clinics to other parts of the city, and help organize tenants to fight
for their rights. If you want to get involved please hit us up by email
at [email protected] or pop into the next NEWR meeting on January 3rd.
🌹 Steering Committee
Next meeting: Monday, December 27th | 6:00 - 7:00 PM Â Join us here!
Our chapter's Steering Committee meets every 2nd and 4th Monday to help guide the chapter at large and promote cohesion between committees and working groups.
These meetings are open to all, so please come with any questions or concerns! All members are heavily encouraged to attend steering meetings - which are often a good way to learn about what all parts of the chapter are doing.
Additionally, the second edition of our Abolition-Zine is underway and is
currently looking for 1) submissions of any kind and 2) Someone who
would like to help facilitate the process of gathering, editing, and
generally coordinating the creation of the zine! No prior experience is
necessary and there are several members already working on the zine who
are eager to help. All you need is a can-do attitude and the desire to
organize! Email [email protected] for more details - or simply pop into the #abolition-zine channel on our slack and type, "I'd like to help out!"
