2021 has been dominated by far-right attempts to block environmental progress and our right to vote. The legislature has been working overtime to disenfranchise voters of color and low-income voters and tried time and time again to block Pennsylvania from joining a regional carbon reduction program that would be our most ambitious action to address climate change to date.

In fact, we had to score a total of 24 bad environmental bills over the course of last year.

We know that our window to take bold climate action is closing by the minute, and that Pennsylvania needs to do more to clean up its air. As the third largest emitter of greenhouse gases in the country, Pennsylvania has the most premature deaths per capita caused by air pollution of any state.¹ And communities of color often carry the greatest burden of such pollution due to decades of racist systems like redlining.

The actions we take in 2022 in response to these challenges will be critical for the future of our planet, our democracy, and the fight for environmental justice. But the scale of our advocacy will depend on members like you showing up in a big way.

Over the last year, support from donors like you helped us broaden our scope of advocacy to include fighting for the Build Back Better Act — the most ambitious federal action to combat climate change, EVER. We used our digital tools to reach millions of people through emails and ads and held 16 events attended by hundreds of people across the state to educate the public about why the agenda matters.

While we continue to advocate for transformational climate legislation at the federal level, we never stopped holding state lawmakers accountable for the surge of attacks on our environment and our democracy this year — including on votes for bills that would have made it more difficult for the state to enact critical environmental regulations and efforts to block Pennsylvania from joining the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI), a much-needed carbon reduction program. We sent over 5,000 messages to the state legislature urging them to oppose any tactics to delay Pennsylvania from joining RGGI, and we remain on red alert for attacks that may come in the new year.

We expect repeated attempts from anti-environmental politicians to let big polluters operate unchecked while continuing to find ways to give them massive tax breaks.
Members of the state legislature will continue to attempt to silence the voices of Black and Brown voters by amending the Pennsylvania constitution to include restrictive ballot access and voter ID requirements.
