Beatrice supports girls to speak up against FGM in Eastern Uganda.
Dear John,
Following our email last week I wanted to show the difference your support can make for someone who is battling daily for girls to choose their own future.
Beatrice (pictured left above) left school at 16 and was forced to get married. She got pregnant soon after and was treated badly by her husband and in-laws for not having undergone FGM.
“My husband said you are bringing shame by not being cut so one morning when I was five months pregnant, I was forced to go and get cut, and as a result, I got an incident of fistula while giving birth. After that, I said my daughter will never go through the same experience.”
Like many women who were traumatised by FGM as young girls, Beatrice is determined to prevent other girls from facing the same fate. Through her involvement with Womankind's project with partners National Association of Women’s Organisations in Uganda (NAWOU), Beatrice has rescued girls who were at risk of being cut and supported those who have survived violence to report it to the police and seek help.
