As one of his first actions since being elected governor of Virginia, Republican Glenn Youngkin is making it clear he intends to remove the state from the regional carbon market.
Youngkin is clarifying that tackling climate change will not be a priority for his administration once sworn into office.
Youngkin is also hoping to circumvent the state legislature by threatening executive action to overturn a bill passed in 2020, that allowed Virginia to join the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI).
RGGI is a market-based program to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from power plants in northeastern and mid-Atlantic states. The program has brought in $228 million for Virginia, which is crucial funding used for state energy efficiency and flooding mitigation programs.
In aiming to pull out of RGGI, Youngkin is siding with Big Energy and climate change deniers. In a sadly standard Republican fashion, he’s preparing to undo all the progress made under Democratic governors and legislatures over the past decade.
