John,
Elections have consequences.
As one of his first actions since being elected governor of Virginia, Republican Glenn Youngkin is making it clear he intends to remove the state from the regional carbon market.
Youngkin is clarifying that tackling climate change will not be a priority for his administration once sworn into office.
Youngkin is also hoping to circumvent the state legislature by threatening executive action to overturn a bill passed in 2020, that allowed Virginia to join the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI).
RGGI is a market-based program to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from power plants in northeastern and mid-Atlantic states. The program has brought in $228 million for Virginia, which is crucial funding used for state energy efficiency and flooding mitigation programs.
In aiming to pull out of RGGI, Youngkin is siding with Big Energy and climate change deniers. In a sadly standard Republican fashion, he’s preparing to undo all the progress made under Democratic governors and legislatures over the past decade.
The repercussions of electing Youngkin will be felt far and wide. Losing climate change advocates at this critical moment is a major setback.
John, elections have far-reaching and long-term consequences. We’re working around the clock to ensure SEEC members are elected to Congress in 2022 — Democrats who will fight to protect our environment and tackle climate change. Will you help us ensure they are elected?

With a narrow Republican majority now in the Virginia House of Delegates as well, Youngkin is hoping the legislature will uphold his executive order taking Virginia out of the RGGI.
That’s why it’s crucial, John, that we elect SEEC members to Congress in 2022 who will continue passing national legislation to tackle climate change and protect our environment. Can we count on your help?
