Friend,

Yesterday, President Biden announced that he is extending the pause on student loan repayments through May 1, 2022. This will deliver much needed relief to borrowers, but it's a temporary solution. We need to cancel student debt.

Maura has spent all year urging the President to cancel $50,000 in federal student debt for every federal loan borrower in the country, along with partners like Senator Elizabeth Warren, Congresswoman Ayanna Pressley, and many of her fellow Attorneys General.

With a simple stroke of a pen, the President could make a significant dent in the more than $1.7 trillion that Americans have in student loan debt. It would send badly needed relief to the one-in-five federal loan borrowers who are in default and the more than half of 2019 Massachusetts graduates with student debt. And it would help make strides toward closing the racial wealth gap.

Maura is not going to give up. She’s going to continue to advocate for widespread student debt relief. In the absence of federal action, she’s going to continue to use the full power of her office to hold predatory student loan providers and for-profit colleges accountable. In 2021 alone, the AG’s Office delivered nearly $10 million in student debt savings and recoveries.

Thank you,
Team Healey
