Clearinghouse on Male Circumcision for HIV Prevention

vmmc at icasa 2021

Dear Colleague,

Several presentations and posters on voluntary medical male circumcision (VMMC), presented at the 21st International Conference on AIDS and STIs in Africa (ICASA 2021), are now available on the Clearinghouse

The presentations are from a 9 December satellite session convened by the Joint United Nations on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS), the World Health Organization (WHO), and the U.S. President's Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) during ICASA 2021 to examine the past and potential impact of VMMC on HIV in eastern and southern Africa.

The introductory presentation from the satellite session summarises the progress made in scaling up VMMC services from 2008 to 2020. A second presentation describes the preliminary findings of a landscape assessment of the sustainability of VMMC programmes in the priority countries. The third presentation presents the preliminary results of modelling on whether continuing programmes that deliver VMMC services for another five years is likely to be cost-effective.

Two VMMC posters from ICASA 2021 describe the collaborative work of the MMC SUSTAIN project and the National Department of Health to improve and sustain VMMC services in South Africa. One poster describes how these partners prepared sites to resume safe provision of VMMC services during the COVID-19 pandemic. The other presents the preliminary results of an intervention to encourage primary healthcare workers to refer clients to VMMC services.

Best wishes for a happy and healthy 2022,

Clearinghouse Webmaster
