Free Speech For People

John,

Last week, we told you how Amazon has pumped over $1.5 million [ [link removed] ] into Seattle's city council elections in order to elect candidates sympathetic to its business practices. Not only does this massive corporate spending drown out the voices of ordinary Seattle voters, but because more than five percent of Amazon's stock is foreign-owned, it represents foreign influence in the city's elections.

Sadly, Amazon's approach is all too common. Here are a few other examples of corporate influence in our elections and policy-making:

* ExxonMobil has spent over $37 million supporting climate change denial since 1998. (Sludge [ [link removed] ])

* Facebook, Google, and Amazon have spent a combined $33 million on lobbying this year in response to calls for breaking up tech giants. (MapLight [ [link removed] ])

* Pharmaceutical company executives and PACs donated $195,000 to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell's joint fundraising committee and campaign committee last quarter. Sen. McConnell has said he will block bipartisan legislation to lower prescription drug prices. (Sludge [ [link removed] ])

*Tell Congress: it's time to overturn "Citizens United" and end unlimited spending in our elections.* [ [link removed] ]

The pay-to-play system hurts all of us. No matter what the issue may be, unlimited campaign spending undermines the Constitutional guarantee of an equal voice and an equal vote for every American. That's why we'll continue to fight to reclaim our democracy and ensure that it once again works by and for the American people.

*Sign the Petition: Tell Congress to overturn Citizens United today and restore democracy to the American people.* [ [link removed] ]

In solidarity,
