Progressive Change Campaign Committee members like you helped me flip California’s 49th Congressional District from red to blue in 2018, so I wanted to provide you with an update on our new congressional maps. In short, I'm headed for a tough re-election campaign and need your help.
Communities like UC San Diego that helped us flip and defend this seat have been lost due to redistricting. Meanwhile, we've added tens of thousands of new voters in Laguna Niguel. It will require significant resources and effort to communicate in these new areas.
Before redistricting, Democrats held a narrow advantage. Now, it's virtually dead-even between registered Republicans and Democrats. Three Republicans are running against me, and this new map has certainly made our district more competitive.
John, we need more progressives in the House, not fewer. Allowing this seat to fall back into Republican hands wouldn’t just make it harder to fight climate change, expand healthcare, lower prescription drug prices, and make sure billionaires and big corporations pay their fair share -- it would all but assure losing our Democratic majority in Congress.
Our shared wins in 2018 and 2020 sent a strong message that progressives don't need to waver on our values in order to win in swing districts.
For the first time in decades, our community has a strong progressive advocate in Congress. I've stood with our veterans against VA cuts and demanded they receive benefits they deserve. I've put ending offshore drilling front and center in the Natural Resources Committee. And I've stood up for the type of bold action we need on climate.
The support of PCCC members like you was a big reason we were able to win and defend this seat. Let's send a message that we still have what it takes to keep CA-49 blue.
Thank you,
-- Mike Levin, Congressman, CA-49
