Dear John,

Today is Election Day for local elections across the country, so please get out and vote!

Click here to find your polling place and learn about what’s on the ballot.

We’re not on the ballot this election day, but we are excited just the same for the races taking place and ballot measures being proposed during this election cycle.

For 11 cities across the country, including New York City, Ranked Choice Voting (RCV) is on the ballot and could change the landscape of primaries and elections across the country.

With RCV, instead of voting for one candidate, you rank the candidates you like in order of preference. If a candidate receives more than 50% of first choices, they win the election. If not, the candidate with the fewest votes is knocked out, and voters who selected that candidate as their first choice, will have their votes count for their next choice. These steps are repeated until a candidate gets a majority of the votes.

This process is meant to ensure the winning candidate is voted in by a majority. It also creates an “instant runoff” so there’s no need for states to have long and costly runoff elections.

If you’re interested in RCV, click here to learn more or to get involved in advocating for this issue in your area.

And, for those of you in NYC, click here for more information on voting in New York today.

All my best,
Lindsey
