Redistricting Update
After much anticipation, the new Congressional Maps for New Jersey have arrived, and Christmas has come early for the writers of Politico Playbook. Here is what changed, what stayed the same, and what it means for us in Morris County.
What Changed
In Morris County, the map was relatively stable. Dover has moved into the 11th District and Mendham Borough and Township have moved into the 7th, with the exception of one district in Mendham Township that remains in the 11th.
CD-11 also did not change dramatically, shedding its share of Sussex County, dropping a few Passaic towns, and adding territory in Essex County. The 11th District 'moved' South and East, making it slightly more Democratic than the previous version.
CD-7 has changed fairly substantially. The district now includes all of Warren County and several Sussex towns lost by the 11th. The Eastern part of the district has also changed somewhat, dropping Millburn and gaining most of Linden. The core of the district remains unchanged, encompassing Hunterdon County, West Morris, and Northern Somerset County. This iteration of the 7th is slightly more Republican than its predecessor.
What Remains the Same
All 39 towns in Morris County remain in either the 7th or the 11th District.
Morris County still has the same two incumbents, Tom Malinowski and Mikie Sherrill, and for the most part they will be contesting the same towns they did in 2020 in Morris County, with the exception of Mendham Borough, Mendham Twp., and Dover.
What this Means for MCDC In short, the objective for all of us remains the same: re-elect Tom Malinowski and Mikie Sherrill, and do our part to protect and expand our slim Democratic majority in the House.
Regardless of what the maps look like, both district remain competitive. 2022 remains a historic election, and one that will represent the hinge of fate for our Democracy. For our part, we will focus on what we can control, and work hard to elect Democrats up and down the ballot in Morris County.
Enjoy the holidays, and come the new year we fight for this election like the democracy depends on it... because it does.
