This is big news: late Monday night California’s independent redistricting commission passed new congressional maps and I am now running for re-election in a congressional district with a lot of new territory and many new voters.

I want you to be among the first to know that I am running for re-election next year in the new CA-18.

The district includes my home in San Jose as well as Morgan Hill, San Martin, and Gilroy — which I currently represent — and also stretches south to include Salinas, King City, Hollister, Soledad, San Juan Bautista, Watsonville, and many communities in between.

This means introducing myself to many new voters who may not be familiar with my work in Congress and my proven record of defending our shared values. And unlike past years — where I have largely raised funds to help others as part of the effort to win and hold the House — next year I will need to spend significant funds on my own race. I will need to hire a full time campaign staff and open campaign offices. And I will have to dedicate precious financial resources to a sophisticated and safe voter communication and GOTV mobilization effort.

You know me — I never back down from a challenge. And I am ready for this one.

I have been successful and incredibly lucky because I have always known you are in my corner and lending your steadfast support.

And so I am writing today to ask for that support once more as I prepare for this new district and the new potential challenges it creates.
