John —

Today is our client Rodney Reed’s birthday. He’s been on death row in Texas for more than 23 years despite mounting evidence pointing to his innocence.

Rodney, a Black man, was convicted of the 1996 murder of a white woman named Stacey Stites, and he’s always maintained his innocence. Stacey, who was engaged to a police officer named Jimmy Fennell, and Rodney were having a consensual relationship, but the prosecution told the jury that they had searched everywhere and that no one had ever said Rodney and Stacey knew each other.

But it was recently discovered that the prosecution illegally concealed statements made by Stacey’s co-workers that showed Rodney and Stacey knew each other and were romantically involved. The State also illegally suppressed statements from Stacey’s neighbors about loud, violent arguments between her and Jimmy.

This is all evidence that could have helped prove Rodney’s innocence in the original trial — instead, he’s been locked up for more than two decades.

But Rodney knows there’s a whole community of people out there fighting for him — and he’s thinking of you during the holidays too.

“I appreciate everyone, and I want everybody to stay safe.”

We know that hearing some birthday wishes from supporters like you would really make his day.

So please, take a moment right now to wish Rodney a happy birthday and let him know that you’ll keep fighting for justice.
