Victory! We've made it through 2021! Senate Parliamentarian's ruling crushes
Hi John, Do you remember how bleak things looked in January? Pres. Trump left office without having signed any major immigration-limiting legislation. Not only that, but Republicans lost both Senate seats in Georgia, allowing an amnesty-friendly Democratic majority to take over the Senate. With that majority, Pres. Biden was threatening to triple the rate of legal immigration, and was pushing for legislation to dismantle immigration enforcement, both at the border and the interior. Well, it certainly has been a terrible year for holding back illegal immigration, with record-breaking masses of illegal aliens pouring over the border in response to promised amnesties and lawlessness. Pres. Biden has forbidden agents to deport almost all illegal aliens who aren't terrorists and haven't killed anybody. His administration has ended workplace raids, so unscrupulous employers have no fear of enforcement. But I think it's a good idea to stop, look around, and realize: together, we've managed to hold the MOST important lines! NO amnesties in 2021... and NO increases in legal immigration, either! We never could have done this without the support of members like you, John Key to our victory was that we spent the money we raised to keep enormous pressure on Congress... just like we promised we would. Even though we've blunted much of the open-borders offensive, we need to change the current dynamic in Washington if we're going to put an end to immigration lawlessness. That's why your support for the coming year is absolutely urgent.
On January 21, the first day of his presidency, Pres. Biden released an outline for an immigration bill that would have TRIPLED IMMIGRATION and given a CITIZENSHIP AMNESTY to almost every illegal alien in the U.S. Do you remember how we spent months fighting and finally killing that bill? The Democrats had to quickly abandon any hope of trying to get Republicans to pass an amnesty or expansion of immigration... at least for now. That's pretty remarkable for the party that not so long ago was led by Pres. George W. Bush and Sen. John McCain! Killing Biden's immigration bill was our first major victory of the Biden era. After Biden was forced to abandon his bill, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and their allies in Congress tried to sneak an enormous amnesty plus a huge green card expansion into his social-spending Build Back Better bill using only Democratic support. Since late summer, NumbersUSA has concentrated our fire on getting Democratic moderates in Congress to yank the immigration language (amnesty + more green cards) out of the bill. Our enormous army of citizen activists got to work phoning, faxing, and emailing members of Congress. We turned on the gigantic phone banks to make sure enough citizens actually made the calls. All this cost us TONS OF CASH! (That's why I've pushed so hard to raise NumbersUSA Action funds this year!) Finally, we started catching some breaks. The Senate Parliamentarian Elizabeth McDonough ruled that the eight-million person AMNESTY in the measure could not be included in a "reconciliation" (one-party) bill. That was a couple of months ago. But then the Democratic leadership put in a "Plan B" amnesty. The Parliamentarian knocked out that one too. But then, they tried putting in a "Plan C" parole amnesty. The final blow to them came last week, when the Senate Parliamentarian killed the Democrats' third try to include an amnesty in their Build Back Better bill... and then Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) came out opposed to the bill altogether. As Chris Chmielenski told you in our newsletter last Friday: "The ruling from the Parliamentarian may not have been directly due to grassroots' pressure, but your months of daily contacts with Republicans helped lead to their Senate leadership making a united, forceful presentation to the Parliamentarian against the Plan C amnesty being included in the budget reconciliation process. And every Senate Republican objected to all three different amnesty proposals that the Senate Democrats presented. Had just one Republican wavered, it could have been a difficult result." This followed the failure to get any Republican support for any immigration legislation and a string of court defeats for Pres. Biden who was forced to try to legally justify refusing to enforce immigration law. It's critically important that the Democrats' vote-counters don't believe they would be successful trying to override the parliamentarian's decision, even though it should be unthinkable; so many ranking and influential Democrats have stated they would vote to override the Parliamentarian's decision. But as Roy noted last Friday, "the constant phoning of amnesty opposition to their offices has likely helped make several Democrats less likely to blow up Senate procedures to override the Parliamentarian." Unfortunately, what's as remarkable is to see how extremist many Democrats could get when they see no benefit to seeking a compromise! The House of Representatives passed a bill that included waivers to allow legalization for aliens guilty of human trafficking, gang-related violence, sex offenses, and yes, even voter fraud! But as you read above, NumbersUSA is not just about sounding the warnings. Unlike so many political organizations, we have the activists and staff to deter Congress from enacting their shockingly extremist impulses. We couldn't keep doing this without your support. And we'll need your support for 2022 more than ever. Please send a 2021 year-end gift. Let's make the sort of actions we've had to beat back unthinkable.
