New BJS Chief of Law Enforcement Statistics, Dr. Alexia Cooper

BJS is pleased to announce Dr. Alexia Cooper as the new chief of the Law Enforcement Statistics Unit. She is a skilled project manager and statistician with almost 20 years of experience conducting social science data collection and research. Since joining BJS as a statistician in 2011, her work has covered many criminal justice topics, including offender recidivism, homicide, indigent defense, child sexual assault, and juvenile victimization. Dr. Cooper is an expert in working with law enforcement administrative data collections and the FBI?s Uniform Crime Reporting Program data. She also directed the National Crime Statistics Exchange (NCS-X) and NCS-X National Estimation Project and was responsible for evaluating, designing, and implementing formula grant awards at OJP, including the Edward Byrne Justice Assistance Grant Program. She received her Ph.D. in Developmental Psychology and her M.A. in Social Ecology from the University of California, Irvine, and her B.A.s in Psychology and Anthropology at the University of California, Berkeley.
