Hi John,

No one should ever be forced to support religious education or discrimination.

But that’s what the Supreme Court seems poised to do in a case involving parents in Maine suing the state to cover tuition at two Christian schools.

Students at these schools are not just getting an education. Bangor Christian School has a mission of “instilling a Biblical worldview” that is “completely intertwined” with the curriculum and identifies the Bible as its “final authority in all matters.”

Temple Academy not only prohibits gay and lesbian students but also refuses to admit students with gay or lesbian parents. And students who come out as LGBTQ at Bangor Christian must renounce their sexual orientation or gender identity after counseling or be expelled.

The Center for Freethought Equality is actively fighting to defend the separation of church and state by electing and supporting atheists and humanists in local, state, and federal offices. But we can’t do it without your support.

While Maine’s law stipulates that the state will cover tuition at a private school if a local public school isn’t available, the school must be “a nonsectarian school in accordance with the First Amendment of the United States Constitution.”

These two schools are anything but nonsectarian.

Teachers at both schools must be born-again Christians “who know the Lord Jesus Christ as Savior.” And Temple Academy requires teachers to sign an employment agreement stating that “God recognize[s] homosexuals and other deviants as perverted.”

We are organizing the rapidly growing atheist and humanist community to counter Christian nationalists who want our government to fund religious indoctrination in schools. But we need your support to succeed. [[link removed]]
