John,
It’s been 257 days since the Biden Administration convened its Commission on the Supreme Court, and one week since they released their final report.
We’ve put together a timeline tracking both the Commission and SCOTUS’s action over the last year. Check it out here, and share with friends!
We have to hold the administration accountable for its inaction, and show the American people why the only way forward is adding seats to the Court.
But during that time, I’m so proud of the work this movement did together in 2021. Here are just a few highlights:
-
Public opinion is on our side. A recent Gallup
poll shows public approval of the Supreme Court at an all-time low (40%).
-
49 Members of Congress including Senator Elizabeth Warren have cosponsored the Judiciary Act.
- More than 100 organizations have endorsed Supreme Court expansion.
- On October 26, more than 26,000 people viewed our virtual
rally on the steps of the Supreme Court, featuring Senators Ed Markey and Tina Smith; Reps. Veronica Escobar, Mondaire Jones, and Ilhan Omar; Rev. Erica Forbes, one of the plaintiffs challenging the Texas abortion ban; and Be a Hero founder Ady Barkan.
-
Rex Chapman,
Tom Colicchio, and
Sarah Silverman tweeted their support.
- More than 75,000 activists have joined our email community.
- Court expansion has been included in major media outlets like
The Washington Post,
Bloomberg,
Bloomberg Law,
Law.com, and
The Daily Beast.
And the Court is clearly rattled. Several conservative justices spent the fall waging a PR offensive — Amy Coney Barrett insisted the Supreme Court "is not composed of partisan hacks;” Clarence Thomas claimed it's a myth that anti-abortion judges always issue anti-abortion rulings, despite his own
perfect anti-abortion record; and Samuel Alito devoted a speech at Notre Dame to insist the Court is not "a dangerous cabal."
Even though it’s clear they’re feeling the pressure, the Court’s conservatives appear determined to inflict immeasurable harm to our fundamental abortion and voting rights. We’re never going to be able to fight back with a research paper — it’s going to take real political power, and that’s what we’re going to stay focused on building together.
The Biden Administration wasted those 257 days but the rest of this timeline is up to us, John.
Thank you for being part of the Take Back the Court movement. You represent the best of what we stand for,
Sarah Lipton-Lubet
Executive Director, Take Back the Court
P.S. We’re about halfway through our end-of-year fundraising drive, and I can’t wait to share the results with our team as we make plans for 2022. Thanks to a generous donor,
any gift you make today will go twice as far toward our $25,000 goal — support us here!
