Dear John,

Next year the Bank of England’s looking into creating a new public digital money system - a Central Bank Digital Currency. [1] If they design it well, it could stop us relying on the big banks that crashed the economy in 2008, and help bring our money system back into public hands. [2] This could be a game changer.

But the problem is, Positive Money doesn’t have enough funding to run the scale of public campaign we need - to drown out the private card and tech companies who’ll be fighting for it to work in their interests. The Bank’s set to launch a public consultation in 2022, and right now it’s the private companies who are shouting the loudest. [3]

So that’s where you come in. Positive Money is a people-powered movement. We work to reimagine money and banking for the wellbeing of people, communities and our planet. And this consultation is a big opportunity for us to make the case for a truly public system.

Our power is driven by the number of us willing to chip in. John, by donating the cost of a cup of coffee each month, you’ll be helping fight for a fairer money system in 2022. Please will you consider starting a regular donation in just 2 minutes now?

As a not-for-profit grassroots movement, ever since we started back in 2010, Positive Money has done a lot on a small budget. [4] Research, campaigns, videos, media, local organising - we rely on charitable trusts and foundations, and the donations of generous supporters to work for a fairer, more democratic and more sustainable system together.

The banks and corporate lobbyists we’re up against have much deeper pockets. But together we’re nearly 30,000-strong. And that’s why we’re powerful. Right now, just 4% of the people receiving this email make donations to Positive Money. But imagine if all of us did - we could really scale up our resources and have a bigger impact next year. And right now is the time for us to do this.

With cash disappearing fast from our high streets, our money is being privatised. But the ability to pay for things is an essential service, like water or healthcare. That’s one reason we've been calling for public digital money, to go alongside notes and coins, for years. [5] And now, with the likes of Facebook threatening to launch its own digital currency, the Bank of England’s gearing up to launch public digital money. Whether it works in the interests of private banks, tech and card companies - boosting their power and profits further - or for the public interest - is up for grabs.

This is a rare opportunity for a big public push to end the stranglehold big banks have over our lives. To end ‘too big to fail’ banking and rewire our money system so it helps communities everywhere to thrive. But we don't yet have enough funding for the resources we need for this campaign.

John, your donation will mean together we can:

> get more articles in the media,

> reach more people with our campaigns and videos, and

> build a stronger research-based case for public digital money.

Regular donations mean our movement can stay flexible and ready to respond to the big opportunities for change when they come along. John, please will you consider starting a secure regular donation to Positive Money today?

We'd like to take this opportunity to thank you for all your support for Positive Money in 2021, and to wish you and your families a Merry Christmas, and a happy and healthy new year.

Rachel, Anna, Danisha and the whole Positive Money team
