It’s tragic that as we enter the holiday season, another surge of COVID-19 is damaging our nation yet again.

Despite being the wealthiest, most powerful country on Earth, America has been devastated by coronavirus. We only make up 5% of the world’s population, but we have suffered more than 15% of the global deaths. It's no coincidence that we also have the most expensive health system with poor health outcomes.

Our system relies on employers to provide health care, which encourages hospitals, insurers, and Big Pharma to boost their profits while discouraging public and preventative health investments. The system created a perfect storm, where millions of people lost their jobs — and access to health care — during the worst global health crisis in living memory.

As a physician, I’ve spent years witnessing patients put off seeing their doctor for checkups because of co-pays and deductibles — only to be diagnosed with advanced cancer, diabetes or heart disease that could have been prevented. That’s why we need Medicare for All.

When health care is a right instead of a privilege, we incentivize preventing disease instead of reacting to it. I'm running for Senate because I'm sick of being sick.
