As we approach the end of 2021, I am reflecting on the progress we have made this year — and the issues that have yet to be resolved. This year alone, there have been over 600 mass shootings in our nation. We cannot continue to be a country where gun violence is normalized; we need to take real action to stop gun violence now.
It’s simple: Americans deserve to feel safe at their schools, malls, movie theaters, places of worship, grocery stores, and workplaces. Earlier this year, I voted for two bipartisan gun violence prevention bills that would require background checks for all gun sales and transfers, closing the Charleston loophole used by the Mother Emanuel AME Church shooter in 2015.
Now it’s up to the Senate to pass this bill, and we need to show that there is overwhelming grassroots support pressuring them to act. Will you sign my petition to demand the Senate pass gun violence prevention legislation now?

As a millennial, this is deeply personal. I was in elementary school when the Columbine shooting occurred. Active shooter drills have become routine for school-aged children, and just this month we observed nine years since the tragedy at Sandy Hook. But it shouldn’t have to be this way.
The legislation I supported in the House is just the beginning. If we want to prevent future tragedies like the ones in Atlanta and Boulder, we need Republican senators to stop playing politics with people’s lives and get to work to keep our communities safe by passing these bills. If you agree, add your name to our petition today.
