Hi there,
Allow me to introduce myself. I’m Mamie Todd, and I’m SO proud to be Ben Jealous’s grandma.
I’ve been on this earth a lot of years – I recently celebrated my 105th birthday. So, as you can imagine, I've seen a lot of suffering in my day, as well as many good-hearted people.
My grandparents were born into slavery. And when I taught in an all-Black school in Virginia in the 1930s, our students weren’t provided with even remotely adequate school supplies.
When I went to confront the school system’s white superintendent about it, his secretary told me, “Well, the colored teachers come around the back.”
I said, “Well, his desk's right there,” so I walked right over to his desk ... He didn't stand up.
He was a human being; I knew we had that much in common. So I took a seat and told him what our school needed. The next day, a truck arrived at the school loaded with all the materials we could need for our classrooms.
Later, my daughter – Ben’s mother – was among the first Black students to desegregate an all-white high school.
Right now, there’s so much more work to be done to ensure that America lives up to its promise for everyone when it comes to freedom, equality, opportunity and justice for all.
That’s why I couldn’t be prouder of the courageous work that my grandson Ben and People For the American Way are doing when it comes to promoting democracy, fighting hate, and defending everyone’s rights.
When it comes to bending the moral arc of the universe towards justice, sometimes you have to give things more than a nudge in the right direction – and that’s exactly what your contribution to People For will do today.
