Friend,

Sunrise GW won divestment at George Washington University, but the fight isn’t over. Now, in order to lead on climate in higher education, GW must reckon with the impact of fossil fuel funding on campus. Institutions of higher education play a vital role in the broader Koch network. The No Fossil Fuel Money campaign is our next step to ensure GW is not influenced by such funding. We are calling on the GW Board of Trustees to reject funding from the six oil companies recently subpoenaed by Congress for their role in the “Disinformation Campaign to Prevent Climate Action” and from the top ten funders of the US climate change counter-movement, including the Charles Koch foundation.

For decades, the fossil fuel industry and allied organizations have spent billions of dollars to mislead the public about the science of and solutions to climate change. This strategy includes funding research in higher education. On our campus, the Regulatory Studies Center is a known recipient of Koch and Exxon funding. The RSC utilizes the GW name to give credit to their biased policy suggestions that justify inaction on climate change. Such inaction is directly impacting the livelihoods of all people, especially in marginalized communities. To end this era of dangerous lies and deadly inaction, our institutions must reevaluate their relationships to the architects of the climate crisis.

What we need now is your help. You can show support for our campaign by signing our petition and sharing it with your community. You don’t have to be a member of the GW community to sign. To learn more about our campaign, read our letter to the university administration and the board of trustees. Together we can ensure the administration hears our demands and rises to meet this moment.

In Solidarity,

Jake Lowe, Student Organizer with UnKoch My Campus and member of Sunrise GW
