** Dear John,

I wanted to share a few stories about our Muslim Youth NYC Youth Civic Fellowship program.

In this program, we select high school youth from all over New York City to participate in a semester-long program that immerses them in civic education. This includes helping them 1) gain confidence in themselves first, as Muslim Americans or just general youth in our city; 2) then it teaches them how our policies and government works; and finally, 3) it ends with the youth designing a community project that actually makes a difference in their communities.

Over the years, MCN has graduated almost 300 civic fellows from our program. Our civic fellows have gone on to become lawyers, social justice activists, nonprofit leaders, scientists, and other professions. A big shout out to the schools that have participated in our program this semester:

James Madison High School, Brooklyn
High School for Community Leadership, Queens
East Harlem Scholars Academy, Manhattan
Frederick Douglass Academy II, Bronx
Razi School, Queens
Al-Mamoor Islamic School, Queens
Al-Noor Islamic School, Brooklyn

See below some of the ways this program has shaped our youth from our Fall 2021 cohort. I hope you'll be able to make a year-end gift to this program to help our youth become more confident and civically engaged individuals!

With Gratitude,

Aniqa Nawabi
Executive Director

"My experience in this fellowship has been very enjoyable. Being able to learn more about my community, while meeting new people and having fun isn’t something I ever thought I would have. It really feels like I am a part of something, as cliche as that sounds. I’ve been grasping more of an understanding of my community and my world, and it really encourages me to do what I can to advocate for the ideas that I believe in. This fellowship has been a wonderful experience and although I’m sad that it’s ending it will be a memory I will continue to look back and learn from." - Hiba Qutub
"Through the fellowship, I've been inspired to expand my reach. I've always been interested in non-profit organizations and social work, and now I'm able to kick-start projects that help my local community. Although reaching out still scares me sometimes, I can see that I need to rely on others to accomplish greater feats. The fellowship has taught me a lot about my city and the problems that need to be addressed, and I hope that I can be apart of the team that provides solutions to those problems, and change the world for the better." - Tabassum Farhana
"As a youth civic fellow at MCN, my experience has been incredible. I have met some amazing people and the environment is very welcoming and friendly. I've learned a lot of new information about my own community and the country, as well as city government. I feel way more educated and empowered to fight for change and educate others about the injustices in this nation and the importance of civic duties." -- Nazifa Ahmed
"Throughout my time as a fellow at MCN, I can confidently say I've learned and experienced a good deal of things. From meeting new peers and collaborating with them towards learning about being civically engaged, I've had a fruitful time at the office. This fellowship has inspired me to become an activist; in dismissing the polarity society has tolerated. My goal in this fellowship is to simply make a difference in what my generation sees as an obligation or an option with civic engagement." - Nawar Kazi
"As a Fellow, I have learned about many different things related to civic education. One of the most valuable lessons that I learned is how to debate to understand the other side of the argument. I will be using that in the future, beyond high school. I have felt a sense of community and safety with other fellows and mentors because we are all in an environment to learn and nurture our understanding of the world around us. I have been empowered to take action in my community. This fellowship has instilled the confidence I need to have thorough conversations about my elected officials and the variety of services our city provides. My experience has been extraordinary! Meeting other fellows from all over the city has allowed me to open my eyes to issues other neighborhoods have to endure, and I am inspired seeing my peers take action on said issues. I hope to accomplish a youth organization that aims to educate young folks about campaigns and provide the necessary training to volunteer for a
political campaign." - Amara Ismail
