Dear Friend,
Your help is needed to continue defending all communities from bigotry.
Now more than ever your support is needed to hold public officials accountable for spreading anti-Muslim hate and encouraging threats and violence against all American Muslims.
Anti-Muslim hate is alive and thriving in Congress, threatening not only American Muslims but the building blocks of our democratic system. In recent weeks, Rep. Lauren Boebert repeatedly called Muslim Rep. Ilhan Omar a suicide bomber and just a few days ago, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene said that Islam preaches “world domination and the death of infidels.” These false, ugly conspiracy theories aren’t just offensive. They’re dangerous. The Muslim members of Congress regularly recieve death threats, and the anti-Muslim attacks coming from Boebert, Greene and other lawmakers will encourage further hate and possibly even violence.
Muslim Advocates is calling on House Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy to break his shameful silence and take real action to hold Boebert and Greene accountable for their anti-Muslim hate. We teamed up with Bend the Arc: Jewish Action to formally call for a congressional investigation into Rep. Boebert’s anti-Muslim rhetoric. When congressional leaders stay silent about anti-Muslim hate, they encourage it—and that is unacceptable.
We need your support to continue the campaign to hold Reps. Boebert and Greene accountable. As Muslim Advocates Senior Policy Counsel Sumayyah Waheed wrote in the Washington Post, "[t]here is a direct line connecting anti-Muslim and antisemitic political attacks to violence. We saw [a] heartbreaking example of this recently when [Rep.] Omar played a terrifying, profane death threat she received after Boebert’s anti-Muslim tirade made headlines."
Muslim Advocates’ work to hold people in power accountable extends beyond Capitol Hill. In Chicago we helped lead a coalition of nearly 80 faith and civil rights groups that helped get John Catanzara, a virulently anti-Muslim police officer to resign. In New Jersey, we called out Edward Durr, a newly elected state senator, for his anti-Muslim social media post and which, in coalition with CAIR-NJ, helped get him to sincerely apologize. In Tennessee and Indiana, we demanded accountability from local officials who spread anti-Muslim attacks on social media.
This work requires constant vigilance and we can only do it because you walk alongside us every step of the way.
Unfortunately, while anti-Muslim hate continues to proliferate, we know that with your support we are making a true difference. We need your continued support to hold public officials accountable now and in the future. Thank you for your help as we work to halt bigotry and speak truth to power.
