John,

Criminal justice reform must include something not often spoken about: Decriminalizing Sex Work.

Here’s why:

Criminalizing sex work drives the industry underground, compromising worker health and safety. Although there have been attempts to decriminalize the purchase of sex work, the stigma, and fear of legal repercussions persist for workers themselves.

Criminalizing sex work disproportionately affects women and especially, transgender women of color. Nine in ten trans sex workers or those suspected of being a sex worker report being harassed, attacked, or assaulted by the police.

Will you contribute $10 to our campaign for Congress to champion a progressive agenda that stands in solidarity with ALL workers in every industry, including the sex industry?

The sex industry is not going anywhere. And the criminalization of this type of work harms workers who are predominately on the margins of society. But sex workers deserve protections just like any group of workers, and I won’t ignore them just because the topic may be uncomfortable for some. I am committed to seeing this legislative effort through. I will fight to protect sex workers by decriminalizing prostitution for adults and expunging past convictions. But first, we have to win.

John, sex work IS work.

Ignoring the issue because it’s taboo causes real and lasting harm. Decriminalizing sex work isn’t radical, but it would substantially decrease harm against workers.

As I think of what is possible in a more just America for workers in every industry, I’m reminded of a quote from activist and author Molly Smith: “Sex workers are the original feminists. Often seen as merely subject to others' whims, in fact, sex workers have shaped and contributed to social movements across the world.”

Let’s protect everyone in our society, including sex workers.
