Wildlife-vehicle collisions have high costs in terms of dollars—and of lives.
In North Carolina, near Great Smoky Mountains National Park, U.S. Interstate 40 bisects the heart of the Southern Appalachian Mountains—home to elk, black bears, bobcats, white-tailed deer, and many other species. Unfortunately, this heavily-trafficked highway creates a barrier to their movements, resulting in significant roadkill in the region. And not only is this a threat for wildlife—it’s also dangerous for humans.
We are taking action on the ground from the steep, tree-lined hillsides of the Pigeon River Gorge, where our team monitors wildlife movement and mortality, providing the necessary data to design road over- and underpasses for wildlife; to the iron dome of Capitol Hill where, thanks to our leadership, the recently-passed U.S. Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act contains $350 million for a “Wildlife Crossings Pilot Program” to reduce wildlife-vehicle collisions nationwide!
Our large-scale, holistic approach to conservation has made quite an impact over the past 30 years—but this is just the beginning. Our mission to reconnect, restore and rewild North America is ambitious, and there’s much more to be done. Join us, by making a gift to ensure a lasting future for our natural world.
For the wild,
Our goal is to raise $100,000 for large-scale habitat and corridor conservation.
