Friend, In a minute, I’m going to ask you to donate before the end of the year to support Faith in Action’s work in 2022. But first, let me tell you about two extraordinary Black women who are leading the faithful rebellion in Florida. As you may know, voting by mail became extremely popular during the COVID-19 pandemic as a way for people to vote while avoiding crowded polling places and possible exposure to the coronavirus. In the spring of 2021, the Florida State Legislature passed Senate Bill 90, which made it drastically harder to register to vote, request a mail ballot, and return a mail ballot in the state of Florida. Faith in Florida, Faith in Action’s Florida affiliate, sprang into action. Led by Pastor Rhonda Thomas, executive director, Faith in Florida sued the state to block SB 90 from going into effect. “Considering that people of color have fought for decades for the right to vote, it is offensive that state lawmakers would attempt to take us back to Jim Crow to maintain their power,” she said. “If my grandchildren ask me ‘grandma, did you fight?’ I want to be able to say, ‘yes I did.’” In addition to the lawsuit, Faith in Florida launched a new initiative dedicated to protecting democracy and moving the electorate in favor of the community. Dr. LaVon Bracy, director of Faith in Florida, has spent more than 50 years advocating for voting rights. She personally registered 1,200 voters in one calendar year and is looking to triple that number with the help of her outreach coordinators. “We are not going to allow the legislators to suppress our vote, we are going to work harder than before,” she said. ”If our fore-parents could figure out how to deal with slavery, we certainly can figure out how to deal with Senate Bill 90.” That, folks, is what faith in action looks like. 2022 is going to be a big election year, and Black and brown communities are going to be targeted with voter suppression measures unseen since the days of Jim Crow. Our work is to put our faith into action and ensure every voice is heard and every vote is counted on Election Day. Please, if you can, give a tax-deductible donation to support Faith in Action’s work before the end of the year. |
