We are ending a year in which the Right has been supercharging its culture war machine in an effort to rile up its political base.

Right-wing groups that the Center for Media and Democracy (CMD) tracks are deliberately stoking public anger over the teaching of racism in America, abortion, and transgender rights.

The American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC), a Koch-funded big business lobbying front group, has been a driving force behind a slew of new state laws this year targeting the alleged teaching of critical race theory in grade schools, even though its an academic framework about institutional racism only taught in colleges. As CMD exposed, ALEC and other right-wing organizations have manufactured a crisis around a threat it made up in order to attack honest history education and inflame racial tensions as the 2022 elections approach.

CMD also exposed that the pro-Trump group Turning Point USA (TPUSA) is raising tens of millions of dollars to “win the American Culture War and to inspire our kids [to] love America again." The well funded organization is expanding its operations to attack "leftist" professors, create "America-first" curricula, and undertake a major effort to indoctrinate the minds of high school students.

Documents and videos obtained by CMD show that ALEC also coordinated state bills that discriminate against transgender people and attack the right of women to make their own health decisions. Meanwhile, we exposed ALEC for defending anti-LGBTQ+ hate groups and working to prevent companies from diversifying their staffs and taking liberal stances on social issues. And we didn't let corporations off the hook; we revealed that the PACs of companies that publicly support transgender rights bankrolled the campaigns of the sponsors of the anti-trans bills in multiple states.

And for influence operations like ALEC and TPUSA, this year is just a dress rehearsal for next year.
